Transfer guide

Transfer a domain,
no downtime, no surprises.

Switching registrar shouldn’t put your website or email at risk. We explain each step, how long it takes and what happens to the expiry date.

Before you start

What you
should know.

01

The domain is still yours

You change registrar, not holder. Ownership only changes if you explicitly ask for it.

02

Your website doesn’t have to go down

If the DNS servers stay the same, your website and email keep working throughout the transfer.

03

It almost always adds a year

For .com, .net, .org, .eu and most extensions, the transfer includes a renewal. For .es it’s free and the expiry date doesn’t change.

04

There are time limits

Many extensions block transfers for 60 days after a registration or a previous transfer.

Step by step

How a transfer works.

  1. 01
    Check the status

Make sure the domain doesn’t expire in the next few days, that the holder’s email address is reachable and that it isn’t in a lock period.

  2. 02
    Unlock it

In your current registrar’s control panel, turn off the transfer lock.

  3. 03
    Request the authorisation code

Ask your current registrar for the AuthCode (EPP code). It’s the key to the transfer: don’t share it over insecure channels.

  4. 04
    Start the transfer in DAEMON

We show you the price and that extension’s expiry rule before anything happens.

  5. 05
    We prepare the DNS

We replicate the zone before touching the delegation, so your website and email don’t notice a thing.

  6. 06
    Registry confirmation

Depending on the extension, the transfer completes in minutes or within a few days. We let you know when it’s done.

It’s for you if…

Is it a good time to transfer?

  • Your renewal price has jumped compared with the first year.
  • Your domains are spread across several providers.
  • You need traceability and access control over your domains.
You don’t need it if…
  • The domain expires in just a few days: renew it first.
  • It was registered or transferred less than 60 days ago.
  • There’s an open dispute over ownership.

Frequently asked questions

What people usually ask us.

How long does a domain transfer take?
It depends on the extension. For .com, .net or .org it can take up to five days if the current registrar doesn’t speed it up; for other extensions it completes in minutes or a few hours.
Do I lose the time left on my domain?
No. For extensions that add a year, that year is added to the existing expiry date. For .es the date stays the same and the transfer is free.
What is an AuthCode?
It’s an authorisation code generated by the current registrar to prove that the holder approves the transfer. It’s also called an EPP code or transfer code.
Will my website or email go down during the transfer?
No, as long as the DNS servers stay the same. At DAEMON we prepare the zone before changing the delegation, so there’s no downtime.
